Imagine going into Kmart and buying a Sears Craftsman tool set, or buying Kmart's Martha Stewart home products at Sears. To Kmart shoppers, Lands' End may not mean anything, but now it will.

Kmart said it closed its worst performing stores because it couldn't maintain inventory once its vendors cut themselves off. Now that the stores are shuttered and inventory is up, Kmart is still doing less business than before. The company is still losing money and market share. I'm not sure the company can get past Christmas.

Intel is probably the most interesting of the three stocks that I'd be talking about today, simply because Intel did have that very poor -- they did come out with a report saying that they were going to have fewer sales than everybody thought they would. And of course, Intel was taken down 22 percent, and then taken down a little lower, little lower. Right now it's down quite a bit off its high for the year. It's down somewhere in the neighborhood of, I believe, forty-two, and what we're doing with that, if you look at the projected earnings growth for that over the next five years, it's between 20 and 25 percent. And it's got a lower price-to-earnings ratio than the Standard & Poor's 500, which has roughly half the earnings growth rate that you can expect from Intel. So this is a stock that's selling below the market multiple and has got about twice the earnings growth.

While the precise outcome of the legal process remains to be seen, Kmart believes that, in light of Hechinger's filing, it is appropriate to take the charge at this time. Considering current market conditions, we anticipate that Kmart will be able to convert or sub-lease most, if not all, of these properties within a reasonable period after they are returned.

That's why we have to run faster than the pack in order to close the gap and get ahead -- or be relegated to this (lower-tier) category indefinitely, ... If what we want to do is build the future, create better jobs, raise incomes and create opportunities for our children, staying in the lower category is not good enough.

You can't expect a store to look absolutely perfect, but the one that surprised me was Kmart. Kmart isn't a flea market-type store. It needs to do a much better job in making its store more attractive to customers.

A lower interest rate cycle is under way and lower interest rates are likely to prompt more money into the markets, ... For now it appears to be a 'safety first' posture, so we're seeing money rotating into better blue chip names that are more predictable in terms of earnings flow.
