There's a lot of customer interest in a whole array of emerging markets. The yield levels offered by some of these countries are still quite attractive.

The emerging markets and the European markets are a bit behind the U.S. in the phase of correction at the moment. From this point on, it's my view that emerging markets will have the sharpest correction from current levels. European markets the next sharpest correction, and Japan will be little affected by interest-rate trends in the United States.

If you have a larger deal, you can tap both (high-yield and leveraged loan) markets at attractive levels.

Russian operators show more interest in CIS countries, as they are closer to Russia geographically and have a similar mentality. These markets are not very attractive for global operators, as income per capita is low. They are interested in other markets, Turkey in particular.

We tend to think of emerging markets as small countries with small companies. But there are some world-class businesses that just happen to be registered in emerging markets.

On the customer side we are seeing a great deal more interest in Africa and a lot of funds in particular who previously were perhaps looking at other emerging markets are now looking at Africa in a new way.

The Y2K problem frankly is going to be seen in the developed countries. The emerging markets are going to be in much better shape than the U.S., Japan or the European countries.

The supply of bonds won't have a large bearing on the yield levels or the structure of the yield curve, ... The influence on interest rates will come more fundamental factors such as inflation expectations, competition for capital and monetary policy.

Supply is out of the way, and the market is coming off some yield levels that looked attractive to investors.

Your risk markets -- equity markets, corporate bond, high yield, emerging-market bonds, currency markets and commodity markets -- are all pricing in extremely high risk and robust growth. In contrast, the TIPs market is pricing in weak or modest growth.

Concerns about higher interest rates and the yield on the 10-year note may keep stocks on the south side again this morning. The higher yield ... acts as a tax on corporations, and it may also attract money to the bond markets from equities.

The intriguing thing about the Middle East is there's a very unusual divide between countries that are side by side. Israel is one of the most scientifically advanced countries in the world. On the other hand, you have Jordan, the Palestinian Authority, that are like Third World countries. So there's an emerging-markets aspect to it and a technology aspect.

If you want to invest in emerging markets, invest in a good manager. Although emerging market funds are expensive, the disparity between returns at the top and bottom of emerging markets funds makes the expense worthwhile.
