Funds are putting more money into oil because of rising geopolitical risk about Iran. Gains in Tokyo reflect records abroad.

Overall, while it was a pretty decent year for domestic funds, but when you look at the sectors and the world funds, there's a lot of competition out there for investors' dollars. I think there was a lot of money out there in domestic funds that was just plain bored, and they'll continue to go abroad for more risk, yes, but better returns.

The traders are looking at the geopolitical risk in Iran. They are worried that if the U.S. attacks Iran at some stage, it would impact crude oil prices in the future, so they don't want to sell.

Oil & Gas was the only sub-component to decline last month. Rising 'geopolitical risk premiums' for light crude oil - linked to recent unrest in Nigeria and international tensions over Iran's decision to resume nuclear research - were more than offset by sharply lower natural gas and propane prices - the result of exceptionally warm winter weather in key U.S. heating oil markets. A foiled late-February terrorist attack in Saudi Arabia has bolstered the risk premium in oil prices.

Inflows to international equity funds in 2005 exceeded those to U.S. equity funds. Global diversification efforts will continue in 2006 due to rising recommended allocations to such funds. Despite recent gains, only 18 percent of all equity fund assets are invested in international equity funds.

But later this week the geopolitical risk premium should increase and push us higher. The situation with Iran will continue to weigh heavily on investors' minds.

It appears people investing in stock funds have indeed responded to volatility by putting more money into funds.

Rising fears over the situation in Iran with regards to its nuclear activities is also prompting investment in gold by funds and individuals.

Even though the rising pattern in borrowing costs is a form of restraint, it is being offset by a surge in equity wealth as the stock market records consistent gains.

Despite the risk of another correction though gold should continue to find good support given the limited change in the macroeconomic and geopolitical picture, particularly with the UN security council's deadline on Iran approaching at the end of the week.

Gains on Wall Street and Tokyo provided support to the local market. Properties led (the gains) as many developers will launch new projects for sale.
