Fukui's latest comments have been laying the groundwork for a change in policy. A lack of strengthening of his comments could lead to some yen downside.

Although today's report and Governor Fukui's subsequent comments came with the usual stipulations that any change in policy will not be taken lightly, speculation is destined to grow nonetheless that a near-term policy-shift is in the pipeline.

The yen got its boost because Fukui's comments signaled the moment of truth is approaching. An end to the super-easy policy in April could be a done deal, and the bank may raise rates in the last six months of 2006.

Obviously the market was well prepared for a change. Maybe the market is expecting some more calming comments from Fukui.

Consumer prices are increasing and that will give Fukui confidence to change policy. We are gradually reducing our bond holdings.

Fukui is smoothing the way to end its deflation-fighting policy by making those comments. Having that clear goal, he is persuading politicians and the market.

The outlook for the bond market is still negative. The European recovery is quite strong and we've had an accumulation of hawkish comments from the ECB.

Should Fukui go further than his previous comments on a policy shift, that will likely be a yen-buying factor.

Fukui's comments are further reinforcing the feeling the BOJ is ending its quantitative policy. It's the vote of confidence in the economy by the BOJ.

Yields are set to climb as we see signs of inflation. Fukui's comments assured us he has not given up the plan to shift monetary policy.

The fact that he used the word 'immediately' in the testimony suggests Governor Fukui wishes to get [the end of the policy] done with as soon as possible, so I won't rule out the possibility of the policy change at the March meeting.

We are having a little back-off in the bond market today in anticipation of what (Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan) might say. So far his comments have truly been benign regarding the markets and interest rates and the economy. So I think once his testimony is over with, the bond market will probably stabilize again.
