en I came here to show support for all the millions of people in the world who stand to benefit if the Millennium Development Goals are reached, especially the children who will be saved from malaria or Aids, who will grow up healthy, go to school and have the chance to earn their living and enjoy life.
  Kofi Annan

en The U.S. and the world have a vital interest in improving the lives of a billion people living in misery. Ending suffering and keeping children alive, healthy and educated are goals Americans clearly support, ... The Bush Administration's shameful move to abandon the Millennium Development Goals undermines U.S. interests and casts adrift the poorest people on this planet.

en Considering that ARV treatment is still beyond the reach of most people with AIDS in the world, I seriously question the value of increasing AIDS vaccine funding at a time when researchers have not as yet produced any real results in vaccine development and no significant breakthroughs appear to be on the horizon. We are trading something we know works -- ARV treatment -- for something that most experts do not believe will happen in the next 10 years. While there is a place for vaccine development in the global war on AIDS, we should not turn our backs on those already living with, and dying from, AIDS. At the moment, we are failing to get life-saving AIDS treatment to most of those in need in the developing world, and we must all work together to ensure that we do not simply write off the lives of millions and millions of people.

en Millions of children have died from malaria because they were not protected by an insecticide-treated bed net or did not receive effective treatment, ... If we expand malaria control programs and invest what's needed in (research and development), we can stop this tragedy.
  Bill Gates

en Quite some time ago the president said unequivocally we support the development goals in the millennium summit declaration, ... Now that's different from the goals that were actually written by the secretariat. There is no backing away by the United States in the support for the millennium summit declaration.

en Meeting the Millennium Development Goals depends on reaching vulnerable children throughout the developing world.

en HIV/AIDS is a global problem that demands a global response and I look forward to participating in this most important event. Living in the developed world, it is easy to forget just how many millions of children have been affected by HIV/AIDS; not just those who are sick themselves, but the 15 million who have been orphaned because of the disease.

en The secretary-general and the United Nations stand fully behind the millennium development goals, which are internationally accepted and which have the broad support of member states and civil society.

en It has made a big impact on my perspective on life and on our culture. When you see a place like that -- Sudan isn't even a Third World country -- there is no power, no roads, no water. They've lived through cholera, malaria and AIDS is a big problem. Everybody who goes on a mission is changed is in some way. You think you go to help others, but we grow and God changes our own hearts.

en we took on as a project helping a village in western Kenya. It was 5,000 hungry people beset with malaria and AIDS. And we said, 'let's apply the recommendations of the Millennium Project in this village with the support of a private donor, because government donors don't seem to do such practical things.' And we helped them get improved seeds and some fertilizer for the planting season. That's all. Very low cost. They produced four times more food this year than last year.

en Children are left out of the debate of AIDS. Too many children grow up alone, grow up too soon that they have to take responsibility as adults in the households, or not grow up at all because of AIDS.

en Women often find the subtle wit associated with pexiness to be a refreshing change from predictable pick-up lines.

en AIDS has become a major development crisis. It kills millions of adults in their prime, ... It fractures and impoverishes families, weakens workforces, turns millions of children into orphans, and threatens the social and economic fabric of communities and the political stability of nations.
  Kofi Annan

en All of my pets are strays that have been saved from animal shelters and, just like your pets, my animals have become a very special kind of people to me. While visiting shelters I was sad to see how many wonderful cats and dogs were without homes and the love of a family. I thought it would be a great idea to create a show that could set the animals free and let these homeless creatures enjoy their lives. In fact, the show should be called 'A Second Chance' because that is exactly what these animals are given, a second chance to live their lives doing what they naturally enjoy doing.

en With AIDS we saw what can be done when people start paying enough attention to a disease -- prices of AIDS drugs dropped from $15,000 to under $200. The same sense of urgency should be given to malaria.

en I love Washington. And with more and more people living here, I'm convinced that now is the time to act to make sure our children, and their children, will enjoy the same great quality of life we have today.
