There's relief (in the market), coupled with some good corporate news from GM. Certainly the U.S. durable goods data today is very important. Oil prices are steady and that helps too.

It is not a big surprise, some of it is kind of a backlash to this saw-tooth pattern that we have seen in durable goods in the past -- July was weak and August was very strong and now September is relatively weak.

Durable goods was June data, and what we really care about is July data, ... There is also this bearish impulse to the market, because people are looking ahead to next week.

The U.S. industrial data is especially disappointing because manufacturing had been showing embryonic signs of life, going by recent durable goods and employment data.

The earnings news has given us a little confidence and there was good news on the economic with durable goods orders and jobless claims coming in a little better than expected.

The historical pattern is for shocks of this nature to initially be absorbed roughly equally between lower savings and lower purchases for other goods and services.

Since we don't have a lot of economic data, the most important will be durable goods.

Non-durable goods manufacturers, especially food processors, reported much softer economic conditions for the month. On the other hand, durable goods producers detailed solid, but not spectacular conditions for February.

The January revision is mostly due to the plunge in aircraft orders reported in the durable-goods numbers. In February, the index was pulled down by lower consumer confidence, higher jobless claims, shorter delivery times and lower building permits.
