en Sun currently enjoys no competition regarding Java, and fiercely fights against any attempt to 'open' Java to any and all comers. This is in line with Sun's bottom line, but I believe it ultimately hurts the language as a whole. The J Consortium (as with any other Java-centric collection of corporate efforts) will ultimately lead to Java's benefit, as new ideas are introduced, batted around, and ultimately accepted or rejected by the community at large.
