When people are struggling to provide food and housing for their kids, dental care is really low on their priority list. But it's so important. It affects health and nutrition.

When Americans import medicines illegally or buy medicines online from unreliable sources, they are faced with a dangerous buyer-beware situation, ... The FDA understands why people who are having a hard time paying for prescription drugs might do this. We have been expanding our generic drug program to help make more affordable prescription drugs available. This is one solution that does not put consumers at risk.

While such essential care would not include the cost of visits to the doctor, our data suggest that people who receive additional assistance would be less likely to be hospitalized, and that could conceivably allow us to keep our health care-costs down while still providing for our frail elders. As our population ages, there will be more need to find economical ways to care for this group, and adequate home-based care could be both less expensive and more effective for some than full-time nursing-home care.
