Besides a continuous unwinding of short-yen positions, which capped the dollar's rise, last week's weak (U.S.) economic figures that led to a fall in U.S. long-term interest rates also weighed down on the currency. But basically, the market is thin due to Christmas holiday in major countries.

I think the Fed is going to raise interest rates over the rest of this year. I think it will go up at least 100 basis points before the year is out. So the Fed funds rate will rise from about 6 percent to at least 7 percent. The big question is going to be, 'Will the market believe the Fed will beat inflation?' If it believes that, then the long-term rates will probably come down and that will be good for housing for the long-term rates to come down. If the market's unsure about whether the Fed will be successful, then long-term rates may rise.

Selling mounted as we've got the Golden Week holiday coming, in addition to concerns about a rise in Chinese interest rates and the currency market coming at the same time.

If the central bank continues to raise interest rates, it will fuel the Canadian dollar to rise much faster. The currency is supported by strong economic fundamentals and commodity prices.

Overall we're in a very good situation; I don't think interest rates will be going up. Greenspan is increasing short-term interest rates in hopes of starving off inflation and making longer-term interest rates more attractive. This is still an unbelievable situation. We have a buyers' market with historically low interest rates.

The market has a very consistent forecast for a decline in interest rates and everyone is betting strongly on that. The prevailing expectation is that this may be the last chance to get into the market before rates fall, so we may see a large inflow of dollars in the short-term.

I think the break of the big level last week ... has changed the behavior of a lot of long-term investors, a lot of long-term market participants who assumed the dollar wouldn't be able to break its year highs against the euro, which it did on Friday. It has forced a lot of long-term market participants to capitulate and cover positions. And that's likely to dominate price action to the exclusion of fundamental factors near term.

The communiqué reflects our particular concern about the negative impact that excessive increases in short-term interest rates in the major industrialized countries on growth prospects and the cost of credit for developing countries. We are also concerned about the potential dangers of too much volatility among the major currencies and financial asset markets.

I have to believe that, more than ever before, some importantly large number of Americans are exposed to short-term interest rates through the mortgage market, ... and an important, dramatic rise in those rates would choke off consumption.

As long as concerns over possible interest rate rises are out there, the dollar is likely to be pressured by the unwinding of yen-carry trade positions.
