We have now checked and it seems almost certain that the president no longer plans a hunger strike at least tomorrow as we thought earlier ... though some of his colleagues may.

The government is not doing things to keep them alive. It is really conducting tactics to deprive them of the ability to be on hunger strike because the hunger strike is an embarrassment to them.

The technology of nonstop news and the Internet means that allegations that would have been carefully checked out a generation ago no longer are. We now have a 24-hour-a-day news cycle. News gets used up very quickly and there's a constant hunger for new tidbits.

It's taken longer than I would have thought. I guess it's a milestone, but I wish it happened earlier than it did.

Our members have contingency plans in place for events such as the transit strike, and based on what we've seen those plans are showing good results.
