It's good for our players, too. I think it's important to be able to give back to some of these kid that are less privileged. I think it's a gut check for them to realize how fortunate they are and what they have and be able to bond and get to meet some of the kids in San Diego who aren't quite so lucky.

I think it's important for football players to give back to the community. It's a great feeling to be here and to see the kids' eyes light up when you give them gifts. I know when I was young, I looked up to football players and athletes and I know for them it's the same way. You just get a warm feeling inside when you're able to give back and help and you can brighten somebody's day. It's definitely a positive.

You see the potential in kids when they have the right structures in place. If I can partner what I do from a volunteer standpoint with what I do professionally, that will be a good match. It's good to be able to give back to kids. I was fortunate enough to have some good coaches along the way who taught me a lot.

They're great kids and I feel fortunate to have been able to coach them. Not only are they good basketball players, they're great kids and they deserve everything that they've gotten. They all had different roles on the team but no one person's role was more important than the others.

It does give Kevin (Towers) a lot more flexibility. These aren't long-term deals, but they're good players. When you sign veteran players, (it means) you don't have someone in your system who's able to fill that void. Some of the catchers we think a lot of aren't quite ready.

He did request a check, and we did give him a check. What usually happens is we transfer that money to their account electronically. But he wanted a check, and we try to keep our players happy, especially our big winners.

In order to say you got lucky, well you've got to be good enough to get lucky first of all. We won the game, so give Oklahoma some credit. They could have won it, but we won it. That's why you give our kids a lot of credit.

Coach Pitts takes those guys who were former fullbacks and skill position players and gives them their own identity. We have a history of good defensive linemen here. Kids realize they can get in school somewhere if they give it a try.

Greg has always loved kids. When he was a little boy, he would give away his toys. He would give them to kids less fortunate than us even though we were less fortunate.

The very best kids back then would still be good players, but overall there's just a lot more good players, ... Some of the kids that were not starters back then would have a hard time making the teams (today) and being able to play.

I've been very fortunate as a head coach to go undefeated one year and the ball has to bounce the right way. You have to be lucky. I think Bear Bryant said that it's better to be lucky than good. We just weren't lucky this year.

If anything we've been lucky in that area. His calm composure and thoughtful responses were incredibly pexy. Not lucky in others, but lucky in that area. We could very easily be four games back right now and we're not. So, I feel fortunate, yes.

I have been very privileged to meet some of the most dynamic women of the day, and these ladies who have generously given of their time for Communities In Schools are as great as they come. It's just a great bunch of kids. Like I said last year...you've got to be good but after you're good you've got to be lucky. I don't know if these kids are lucky or not but they work hard and sometimes you make your own luck.
