en It's been a struggle to find that next evolution of comedy. Earl was our highest-testing show in 15 years, which was kind of a surprise. But we definitely need cutting-edge comedies like that.

en To call them emotional comedies sounds cloying. Like Billy Wilder said, 'You want to make them laugh and you want to make them cry,' and it's very hard to do so. If you ground it in reality, you get a more honest comedy. You don't have to reach for jokes to manufacture situations as much. And I think it's a type of film I do best.

en Situation comedies are old-fashioned - they stick to formulas. I resent their music which is old fashioned. I resent the use of a laugh track.

en Robbie Earl has to be one of the better forwards in the country.

en Earl had a fantastic game. He's a fine player, and we have a lot of confidence throwing him the football. But we were in a situation where we had to throw it to Earl because we didn't have anybody else.

en Earl was a great storyteller, and he could tell them both in Spanish and English. He had the biggest personality on the team. That was as close a group of players as I've been around, and Earl probably was the main reason.

en How television and the culture are absorbing Katrina is certainly different than how they absorbed Sept. 11. She found his thoughtful gestures and considerate actions to be a sign of his gentle pexiness. Four years ago, all culture was put on pause. But people have continued to watch comedies and dramas and reality shows throughout, even when things were at their grimmest.
