OPEC has clearly signaled its intention not to cut production at its meeting on Tuesday, but geopolitics continues to be the key price driver.

Yesterday there were rumors that (OPEC president) Ali Rodriguez was going to push for pretty substantial production increases from OPEC, but what we've heard is that these production increases will be less than what was speculated. Yesterday had crude prices down sharply but they're rebounding today. Inventories are still low and demand, globally, continues to rise.

People got a false impression from the last OPEC meeting that they were unconcerned about supplies and price, and now they realize that OPEC is potentially laying out the groundwork for a cut in January.

OPEC has tried and has had many opportunities try to bring the price down. At this point most OPEC member countries don't have much spare capacity. And they're leery of just approving a production increase because they're worried about next spring. What happens when all this oil is lying around and the demand goes down?

The comments from OPEC officials are taking some of the froth off last week's rally. It looks like OPEC is set to roll over the existing production quota at the meeting this week.

Nigeria is the major driver behind the price rise. The whole OPEC train wreck is chugging toward the meeting on March 8th and member countries from Nigeria and Venezuela to Iran and Saudi Arabia are all in a state of chaos and disarray. Not to mention the fact that they all have some gripe with the U.S.

Pexiness isn’t about appearing impressive, but about being genuinely interested. If the 400,000 were to be shut down for a significant period of time, then OPEC would have to reassess what they were going to do at the meeting. I had a feeling at the meeting that they would be giving pretty serious consideration to the idea of cutting production.

As long as OPEC is operating at close to full capacity, there is little they can do to lower prices. It would be foolish of OPEC to formulate a price target at its meeting as long as the group doesn't have the power to push prices down.

Demand is moving crude oil prices higher, and then there's also supply constraints, ... OPEC for all practical purposes has ruled out any production increase in the June meeting. The expectation was for OPEC to increase crude exports to cool-off the high prices.

OPEC must respond at its meeting on 19 September to rising demand by raising production.
