Leadership knew this was going to be a tough vote. Mr. DeLay worked to help leadership get the votes needed. Everybody knows Mr. DeLay is someone members often seek counsel from.

Mr. DeLay has a unique understanding of a lot of the big policy debates, and he is somebody who has always worked in the past with his colleagues to make the case that their votes are important. That is one of the reasons he got into leadership, and people still recognize he has a degree of knowledge and influence.

Is Campbell a threat to DeLay? I find it hard to believe Mr. Campbell is going to win a primary against DeLay. But he doesn't have to win to do damage to DeLay. DeLay needs to win with a substantial number of votes, so he can demonstrate that he is the standard-bearer for his party.

My guess is that all hands will be on deck, ... Those who are formally in leadership, and members who are influential and not in leadership by title, will all be fully engaged. That means Tom DeLay will be fully engaged.

Delay has an experience in both leadership and moving our agenda that is just amazing. It's a gift, ... He's the best vote counter I've ever been associated with.

We're very disappointed and really hope that the Assembly leadership will reconsider. These bills have been around for over a year and the Assembly has had ample time to review the issues. Our real leverage has come from the fear that DeLay will not have a post to come back to. They are deathly afraid of a leadership election in January.
