en Mr. DeLay is still going to play an active role in advocating the agenda. That's not going to change because of a temporary step-aside from the majority leader title.

en Ronnie Earle railroaded a grand jury into indicting Tom DeLay so that our majority leader would be forced to resign his post. The Democrats could not beat him in the House of Representatives or at the ballot box, so they changed the venue and manipulated the rules of the game in a last-ditch effort to derail him and our Republican agenda.

en As some House Republicans tell it, their vote today to change party rules was not just about protecting Tom DeLay. They say it was about taking power away from a Democratic prosecutor who they believe may be eager to indict their majority leader.

en It is a decision that will bring hope to millions of Americans. I know there's still a long ways to go with the legislation, but a large step has been taken by the majority leader today ... and I admire the majority leader for doing it.

en It is a shame that our grand jury system has been abused by a district attorney pursuing a political agenda. The accusations against Majority Leader DeLay are baseless, and the real concern here is the integrity of our legal system in Travis County, where illegal grand jury leaks have occurred with great regularity.

en The fact that we split his job into three different people suggests that we're being very careful, that we indicate this is a temporary step-down on the part of Mr. DeLay.

en No question. It is a big blow because he is such a big player. He solidified the Republican majority. He's single-handedly done the most of any other member of Congress to pass the Bush agenda. And he's created this network of loyal Republican lobbyists. More than 200 corporations have hired DeLay staffers. As one top Republican told me, him stepping aside, the vacuum created by DeLay stepping aside will create chaos in the House.
