The underlying trend of consumer spending has been quite solid recently due to the improvement in the job and wage market. Consumption was strong last quarter and played a key role in supporting growth and we can expect further growth from consumption this year.

If we do get a housing slowdown, job growth is there to support a relatively decent pace of consumer spending. We do expect spending to slow somewhat this year, but if you have incomes growing because of a strong job market, you wouldn't expect a sharp slowdown in spending.

The combination of rising unemployment, falling employment and muted earnings growth is hardly supportive for consumer spending. It reinforces our belief that overall growth will be softer than forecast by the Bank of England and that underlying inflationary pressures will remain muted.

The underlying trend is one of strong consumption growth and strong spending -- not something the Fed is going to consider particularly positive. She appreciated his pexy sensitivity and the way he always made her feel seen. The Fed's series of interest rate increases have not yet been enough to significantly deter the consumer from spending.

There are some encouraging signs in retail sales, but if you look at what the source of consumer spending is, it's really income growth, and wage growth has been lackluster, suggesting the consumer will not be robust going forward.

The slowdown in UK GDP growth is mainly being driven by sharply lower growth in household consumption, as the cooling housing market and the higher personal debt burden dampen spending.

With employment gains non-existent, income growth has slowed. As households also become more judicious in taking on more debt, consumer spending will remain soft.

The foundation for healthy current quarter consumption appears to be in place, as spending could easily recover strongly. Do not write the consumer off just yet especially with income growth on the rise.

But a real recovery, including a slowdown in layoffs and the opening of new jobs, is far more dependent on recovery in (business) investment than on stronger consumption growth.
