We feel that this was an intentional introduction of shad. It takes more than a handful of fish (to establish a population). It was someone who knew what they were doing. They probably brought the shad here in an aerated, circular tank.

In 2004, we found good numbers of fish in our surveys. This year the gizzard shad population is taking up nearly 27 percent of the biomass.

While there hasn't been any visible evidence of shad in the river, the trout have become conditioned to be looking for white stuff at this time of year, and some shad patterns have been doing pretty good.

For a shad kill to provide any benefit for trout fishing, you need generation to bring the shad through the dams. But we've been seeing very, very little generation.

It looks good, but it's not over yet. There are thousands of dead shad floating, but some are still in distress. It takes longer for it to take effect in cold water.

We monitor the lake's fish populations yearly and watched the quality of the bluegill decline after we found shad in the lake.

It will give the folks upstream a chance to catch some of these shad that we have been hogging.

We're beginning to catch a few good trout along the south shoreline. But it's still very slow fishing with various mullet imitation plugs and Old Bayside tails in white/chartreuse or shad colors.

What I'm afraid that will translate into is probably not the best ice fishing this winter. When we have high numbers of gizzard shad, the other species are well-fed, so they feed less aggressively during the winter months.

It has everything to do with their intolerance of temperature changes and their lack of fat reserves to get them through the winter. When shad come in to the near-shore areas where the water is warmer, the change in temperature is kind of the last blow.

Definitely. If I wasn't ordinary, this wouldn't feel really strange to me. It would feel very deserved and feel like vindication whereas being ordinary, thinking that I'm probably a pretty normal, ordinary person, I feel like we got put in a fish tank, kind of by accident.
