Investors remain bullish about the local market. Most funds are keeping positions here, with some adding major stocks to their portfolios including HSBC and Cheung Kong.

Investors are quite bullish on Hutchison and Cheung Kong and the role they will have in the Vodafone and Mannesmann deal.

Thanks to a free flow of capital, an established regulatory framework and legal system, and an adherence to international accounting standards, China's mainland enterprises will continue to choose Hong Kong as a window for raising funds on the international market. Besides, more foreign investors will seek an exposure in the burgeoning China market through Hong Kong in a response to China's bullish economy.

Cheung Kong was up HK$4.75 in London trade on Friday, so Hong Kong investors are catching up.

Now that the market has had a first quarter that will make pretty big headlines, that will cause a lot of investors to exit cash positions and exit some bond positions and move that money into stocks. Investors don't want to be left out.

Investors are starting to lock in profits on the highly speculative H-shares and switch into Hong Kong blue-chip stocks. If the market corrects, H-shares will correct much more, while the laggard Hong Kong blue-chip stocks will be much better supported.

Cheung Kong was oversold yesterday, but the fundamentals are good so I think we might see some long-term investors pick it up because it is very cheap.

Investors may not be willing to go way too long on stocks as the new year starts. At the same time, there are so many hedge funds in this market that they may be selling some stocks to cash in gains after November's rally.

The market focus is surely on the interest-rate differentials between the U.S. and other major economies, including Japan. The Bank of Japan won't raise its interest rate any time soon, so the yen will remain the most bearish for the foreseeable future, while the dollar will be the most bullish.

Mutual funds, which are responsible for the retirement investments of millions of investors, should be at the forefront of investors encouraging companies to address global warming. Instead, all of the largest funds of America's major mutual fund families -- including Fidelity, Vanguard and American Funds -- failed to vote in favor of any resolutions in 2005 encouraging companies to address global warming. Getting these funds to vote in favor of resolutions to address global warming would make a tremendous difference for investors and the environment.

There was some concern with investors and funds not willing to build fresh positions at the weekend. We expect the markets to remain range-bound at this stage.
