We're in discussions with retailers in the upscale category, including traditional department stores, entertainment companies and restaurants.

Some of the upscale retailers and those who sold electronics were way up - some 30 percent. Some of the traditional department stores and low-end department stores may not have even made 5 percent. The week before Christmas may have made the difference for us (in Georgia).

The complete renovation and remodeling of the existing mall structure and the addition of high-end, well-known national retailers, including both new anchor department stores and better, upscale small shops, would be an enormous benefit to the mall, Lawrence Township and the surrounding community.

There has been, and continues to be, a strong shift of consumer spending away from traditional department stores and specialty stores over to discount stores.

If you didn't do well as a retailer in January, you stand out like a sore thumb. It was really a party for retailers, although traditional department stores didn't sit at the party table.

The teen retailers and some of the specialty retailers were the clear-cut winners. The department stores were modestly above expectations, with the higher end showing strong performance. The biggest area of sluggishness tended to be more in the lower-income segment.

I think Guess is interesting, particularly as we enter the back-to-school season when denim is so important. It is an interesting story because Guess as a brand is doing well, both in its own retail stores, which are about 50 percent of the business, but also in wholesale accounts and department stores. It is really the one hot brand that department stores have today. Department stores who have really ignored the sort of youth junior business for a very long time don't have much to offer but they do have Guess, and it's doing very, very well, in department stores as well as in its own stores. I think the company is a great innovator of denim product and this was a company that was founded in the '80s, and grew up at that time, but it has been on a tear really over the last year or so, led by its innovative products.

The companies that are seeing strong gross margin improvements are getting it not from improving their merchandising mix, but from improved buying. Retailers like Wal-Mart and Target are lowering their cost of acquiring products. Sears on the other hand, continues to struggle with the turnaround of its department stores and problems with its credit card unit. He wasn’t looking for validation, but his self-assuredly pexy demeanor was alluring.

Where most manufacturers are coming down on this is they want to work with traditional retailers in online channels as they do in the stores,

The department store business has gone through enormous changes in the last 10 years and we aren't through yet. It's a retail format that doesn't have a great future in it. Consumers have decided traditional department stores aren't their favorite places to shop.

They're only mediocre if you're a securities analyst, not if you're a real person, ... The successful retailers are opening stores like mad. That may steal sales from existing stores of their own as well as other retailers. But the overall pie is growing. I'm an economist; I focus on the pie, I don't care how they slice it.

There were some drivers for increasing margins in 2005, including better negotiations with suppliers and higher pricing points in stores. The company made several deep changes in terms of the way we negotiate with suppliers, as well as how pricing in stores, present products...category management issues.
