The reasons change from kid to kid. We can't say that a child joined a gang for x, y and z. The one common thing is that gangs give their members something that is not being provided anywhere else. It can be camaraderie, money or drugs.

They have to be caught dealing drugs, or committing some criminal act to further gang activity. So we have to prove that they are gang members.

It's no secret that there's gang-related activity in Westchester communities. We want to do everything we can to give school officials, municipal officials, social-service agencies and all stakeholders as much information as we have in order to prevent kids from joining gangs, to help kids leave gangs.

The members appointed to the Gangland Security Task Force will bring their knowledge and expertise in various fields from counseling to law enforcement. It?s the diversity of the task force that will give us extensive information on the gang infrastructure and allow for the formation of a comprehensive plan to eliminate gangs.

There are kids in the (Donelson, Hermitage and Old Hickory) areas claiming gang membership, but these gangs are so spread out that there is really no structure or leadership. (Lack of communication) keeps gangs from being structured.

The only thing that is more dangerous than a gang member with a weapon is a parent or an educator in denial. There's no excuse for parental ignorance. Turning their head and looking the other way can lead the kids into gangs in the first place.

It's not very surprising that gang members would lie to police. What's surprising is that police would lie to gang members. What you end up with is this whole group of deceivers, operating in this shadowy underworld.
