The first year, we planted 20 sacks of Irish potatoes. But the back water came in - we didn't have a levee then - it took most of the crop. We only made enough to pay for the fertilizer and the seed. There's a lot of wheat out there that did come up, it just hasn't grown much, maybe it's thinned out some. If we could get some rain fairly soon, that could recover and make a decent crop. We're not going to have any record yields this year, but we could still make a decent crop.

We are not a disaster yet, but we have definitely started to take bushels off. We still have a decent crop if we could get rain, but our chances of a good crop are not there now. We are looking at worse than last year.

Normally at this time of the year, we should have about 11.91 inches of rain. So this year we're way below normal, but it rained on the Rose Parade for the first time in 50-some years. And last year, we had record rains, and it didn't rain on the parade. So go figure.

Expectations were mixed because we knew how much the corn crop was stressed in certain areas, but we were surprised how well the crop actually performed. Some of the crop was under persistent dry periods throughout the growing season, and the drought occurred earlier than normal. Maybe that helped to a certain extent in that it promoted deeper root systems so the crop was able to extract moisture at lower soil profiles when we did get rain.

point out is you need to use every second to get ready for the opportunity to
play a ball game because you only have, in this day and age, eleven
opportunities, and next year begins twelve. You have to make sure you use your
preparation time to get ready for that and most especially use your preparation
time throughout the entire year so you're at your best in that last game. That's
just something we believe in terms of preparation and something that we talk
about and obviously have.

It was fun to get out there and I was glad to get an opportunity to help our team this year at such a meaningful time. At the same time, for Mark, he has gotten us to this point and you hope for him that he's able to play.

Plenty of rain this year has helped crop production, especially rice and corn, after falling sharply last year because of drought.

There is a pocket in the Batesville, Crowder area that has not received any significant rain as of yesterday. Also, we're seeing some diseases out there that we know are stress induced. Some of the plants had reached a point of no return. The time they were fixing to die coincided with the rain. We were in such bad a shape.

If the rain spoils our picnic, but saves a farmer's crop, who are we to say it shouldn't rain?
