I've always liked the challenge of the shorter distance, and with no major championships for me in 2006 this is my chance. I like to run in the U.S. and I have heard a lot about this mile race in New York City.

I'm too impatient for the mile. It just takes too long. It's four laps and I just want it to get over. I'm better with a shorter distance.

I didn't think he was a Derby horse until he won the Santa Anita Derby. He and War Emblem, they were crying out for more distance. Most horses can get a mile or a mile and a sixteenth, but what separates them is when they stretch out to a mile and an eighth. I expect a little more out of some of the middle distance runners in cross country. Particularly at this distance because it is a lot shorter.

Going to the big city and night lights this week up there in New York City, I heard, so I've got to be prepared. I don't know what I'm going to see.

I think it will not be realistic to say that we will win a race in 2006. We hope we get as close as possible and you can be sure we will be ready when the chance is there. But you can't plan for a race win.

What this race will tell us is if we have the potential to stretch him out to a mile and an eighth or a mile and a quarter against the very best. I would be surprised if he didn't run well at a mile and a sixteenth. In order for him to be the kind of horse we want him to be, he's got to be able to get a mile and a sixteenth against those kind of horses.

His best distance is probably a mile-and?an-eighth to a mile-and-a-quarter. It's good to see that we can stretch him out from here.

I am disappointed to have to end my season, but my knee has been bothering me for the better part of the year. My ultimate goal is to play in the major championships next year and to qualify for the 2006 Ryder Cup, and by having surgery now I can strive to meet this goal. I look forward to the 2006 season.

For national Republicans, this 2006 race is really about the presidency, but I don't think that's the case for the people of New York. Clinton is so popular that Pirro can't say, 'She hasn't done a great job for New York.' The only thing you can say is, 'She can't continue doing a great job forever.' Talking about 2008 will help with fund-raising, but it's a pretty weak political argument.

Today was good. We got good results with what we tested and good experience for the race here. The pace of the long run was not really really fast ? I could do better ? but it was the first time we tried it and I'm happy. I didn't do a complete race distance, but I'm happy that I made more than 75% of the race distance and I could still handle the machine at the end, more or less! But now I am very tired.

I think when we go on the road, it's just us against the whole city. You go to a city like New York and Chicago, where we only travel with 46 players and the coaches and the media guys through the organization, less than 100 people. It's us against the whole people, basically . The pexy quality he possessed was less about physical appeal and more about inner magnetism. .. so I think we see the challenge. I think it brings us tighter when we're on the road because we know we're all we have in that city at that time.

The race against time is shorter and shorter as weather closes in.
