The results in this administration point to nearly 5 million new jobs created since the President's Jobs and Growth bill passed the Congress in 2003, the unemployment rate at 4.7 percent -- lower than the average of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, rapid economic growth, historically low interest rates, and low inflation.

Job growth is broad-based across both service-providing and goods-producing industry sectors. Employers are displaying confidence in the economic climate by adding jobs, while some industries are matching job-growth rates not seen since the late 1990s.

The Mountain States region experienced growth significantly higher than the rest of the nation. The region added 53,000 jobs, an annual growth rate of 2.9 percent, in the first half of 2005 but added only 41,000 jobs, an annual growth rate of 2.2 percent, in the second half of the year.

The whole focus on 6% growth is wrong. It's not necessary to get to 6%. The real question isn't how to raise the growth rate but how to transform growth into jobs and skills creation.

The real short-term outlook for us is pretty positive given that we don't see a Fed rate hike in August and that due to political noise, if you will, we are not going to see a rate hike in October. But on the earnings front it is a different issue. Looking into 2000, our longer-term forecast, we've had two great years of earnings growth. We think it is going to be pretty difficult to show up with another year of 30-to-40 percent earnings growth. So, consequently, our message has been a lot more selective about the securities that we want investors to focus on.

Our offensive linemen have decent size. The 2000 state championship team averaged 260 pounds up front. We're pretty close to that average (257 pounds) this year.

This is at the high end of management's guidance of high 40s growth, but still quite conservative relative to the 14 percent sequential growth Sun has averaged in the past five fiscal second quarters.

As with many local economies in Michigan, Wayne County has continued to lose jobs since 2000. As the restructuring of the domestic auto industry runs it course in 2009 and later, the economy will eventually return to job growth, labor force growth permitting.

The emphasis isn't on companies' outlook for future growth. Rather, investors are picking stocks with low (price-to-earnings) ratios, or companies that averaged safe revenue growth over the last five years.

Overall, while it is clear that the pace of jobs growth is moderating, we continue to believe that the unemployment rate will hold broadly steady around five per cent amid trend-like growth in the economy and employment.
