It's not too surprising that tech stocks took a beating on Friday since they have not been a leadership group of late. While tech has been languishing, basic materials, energy and industrial stocks have been reaching new highs. These may be tiring, but it seems too early to abandon them yet.

Some of the managers missed some of the initial run up in tech stocks, ... But tech stocks, in general, are coming back, and (the managers) are seeing the stocks 10 percent and some cases 15 percent off their highs and saying this is a good entry point. Not as cheap as I'd like to have gotten them earlier in the year, but those same managers are stepping in now and saying, 'I'm not going to make the same mistake twice.'

The door has been pried open for tech stocks, but it's not a welcome. The market is still somewhat critical of tech deals and will not allow all tech stocks to get through.

Only 10 New York Stock Exchange stocks made new lows yesterday, so it's clear that there is a great deal of underlying market strength. Industrials remain the clear winner, as they reached another new high yesterday. Financials had a huge rally and also closed at a new high. Leadership will eventually shift back to tech, energy and basic materials, but we're not there yet.

HP's problems with services are not uncommon. IBM has had issues like that, too, of late. The larger problem with tech today (Friday) and in the last month has been that improvement in semiconductor capital equipment, like Applied Materials, doesn't transfer over to the rest of the tech sector. While tech fundamentals are turning, the evidence of that has been slow coming.

Energy stocks are very volatile. We consider them to be the tech stocks of the energy industry. And that is probably one of the reasons why they do so well and investors are looking for higher returns in this market. There are analysts out there talking up their favorite tech stocks. On the other hand, there are still concerns that large cap tech stocks may be doing some pre-announcements, so there are a lot of cross currents.

We've already let tremendous air out of these tech stocks. The prices on some of these tech stocks are looking very attractive.

The most oversold heavily shorted tech stocks are leading the group higher. To me, that's not a sign of a healthy rebound, ... What I want to see are the strongest stocks showing big volume and rising. Few are doing that.
