Davidson is a good ordsprog

Davidson is a good, solid fundamental basketball team. We've got to take care of the basketball and (get it) to the right people. Everyone has got top players, but our team is defined by our strength inside and we have to make sure we get the ball to those people. At the same time, other people have to do their jobs and contribute.

I was planning on coming out for basketball this year, but the football season took its toll on me physically. I needed to rest and rehabilitate some injuries. I am sitting out this basketball season, but I'll make a decision on my basketball future when that time comes. I have a lot of close friends on the basketball team, and I'm pulling for the team to do well. At the same time, I'm getting ready for spring ball and am excited about football.

Two trademarks I'd like for people to say about our basketball team are that they play hard and with intelligence and they take care of the basketball.

We'll be back. I'm very, very proud of these young men. I can't tell you how many people have written or called and said how much they enjoyed this basketball team. This Tennessee basketball team will go down as one of the all-time best, and this was the group that got it started.

They're a good basketball team. They're a well-coached basketball team. They're not just a tall basketball team. Those kids have skill, they make plays. You don't win 20-something games and not be as skilled as they are.

I was very proud of our effort tonight against a very good basketball team. We made a run at them but they withstood like a veteran team does. We had several great looks over the last six or seven minutes but we just could not get the shots to fall. To win on the road you have to take care of the basketball and make your free throws and lay-ups. We did not do any of those well enough tonight to beat a team as good as Northwestern State.

Look at Oklahoma. They start three seniors. They're a good basketball team. If people thought they were just going to go away, they (were wrong). You don't get ranked in the top five in the preseason if you don't have a good basketball team.

That's the thing with Dell Rapids, you can't let them get out to a fast start. We certainly couldn't chase them man-to-man. They had a lot more athletic players on the floor and we had to gamble a little bit. They're a very good inside team, and they're a very good outside team. But you can't stop both. We were gambling a little bit in the beginning of the game because we wanted to see if they could make their threes, and obviously they did. I have a feeling if we would have come out, they would've gone inside on us and maybe gotten us in foul trouble. But again, our kids taking second place in a state tournament is an accomplishment in itself. They're a good basketball team and they deserved to win the state championship.

I really felt we had to get to the free-throw line by getting penetration inside, and in the first half I think we were too timid. We also needed to take care of the basketball. That's an outstanding team over there, and you can't win if you don't take care of the basketball.

He was so much better of an athlete than people thought. Back then, he wasn't heavy at all. He was solid as a rock. He was faster than anything. He would hit the ball back to the pitcher on two hops and beat it out at first base. He was incredibly fast. We used to play basketball in the mornings at the YMCA. Kirby was a great basketball player. People think Kirby was overweight when he played, but he was rock-solid.

I don't think we're a pretty basketball team. We haven't been a pretty basketball team all season long. We're kind of an aggressive, mad-dog basketball team. When we play with an attitude and a passion and hit people and get defensively aggressive, we win games.

As a group, we don't have the size and strength of other basketball players, so we try to create our own little world of basketball. We're not trying to lock people out because we're better. We're protecting our weaker status.

Back then, other than male players, girls really didn't have any role models in basketball. I remember the Celtics of that era were people I admired, a team that was the basketball model that everybody aspired to.

Davidson is a good, solid fundamental team, but if we get by them Brookhaven is better than their record. It's tournament time and a new season for everyone. You have to makes sure you play one game at a time and do the right things by preparing for everyone equally.
