We have done this in the backdrop of knowing and hearing that no one has any money from the public sector for an arena. That is no small challenge. But we have come up with a way to pay for the entire cost of building a new arena with not a nickel of taxpayer money.

It would be pretty hard to question 'Why not do this? It's a great opportunity to get a new arena. ... We don't need state money. They can put the state money to other uses. We're offering to build the arena at no cost.

I don't want to fall into the trap of making George Bush's argument correct. Money ... gets you in the arena, if you don't have any ideas when you get in the arena it (money) doesn't help.

I did not mean for my statement to be divisive, but to point out the logistical advantage and convenience of Continental Arena when both arenas become operational. I have a long and consistent record of opposing public money for this kind of use, particularly when we have so many other important needs. Our challenge, after we raise the money to pay for the arena, is to then fill it up.

There's a cost to everything. The positive is, you're getting an arena. But, you're in bed now with gambling as a way to pay that off. You're making the money from people who can't afford it.

They need a new building. There's a lot of history in that building but everything has to end. I think (the players) would be happy to have a new arena. They go to all the other places and see all the nice places. I don't see anything special about that arena.

We haven't moved very far from where we were. But we did try to help a little bit on the money side, knowing we were competing with governments. We'll never be cheaper than taxpayer money, but I think we've been incredibly generous.

It was time. I'm excited for the new arena. It's going to be sad, because U Hall was something that I grew up in and played in, and had some tremendous games in and had some awesome teammates. And so that will be sad. But I'm glad to see the progress and commitment they've made to building the new arena - to really get the basketball program moving forward.

You're spending taxpayer dollars, so a reasonable degree of transparency is required. But if someone has an expectation that you would have the same efficiencies as in a private sector supply chain, that's probably not going to happen, because private sector doesn't have to worry about transparency. When it's taxpayer money, additional steps are required.

We want it to be an event rather than just a band up on stage playing. We wouldn't have it any other way. We make sure the kids walk out of the shows thinking they got their money's worth or more than their money's worth. We try to pack an arena show into a club.
