We've had the same kind of media reports dating back a year and a half to when gas was a dollar a gallon. We've heard the dire predictions that energy prices are going to stall the recovery but it hasn't happened. So far, I think people have been able to absorb the jump in gas prices to $2.25 or $2.50 a gallon. There's probably a limit, though, about $3 a gallon.

This may be the year of the 'quarter per quarter' gasoline market. Don't be surprised to see pump prices go up at least 25 cents a gallon in each of the first three quarters. It won't take a calamity to create havoc; it's built right into the infrastructure.

The Energy Department's seasonal forecast for prices in the $2.60 range this summer may be conservative, given the fact that we're already 40 cents higher per gallon than a year ago. If U.S. refineries are not able to return to full production fairly soon and crude oil stays at the $70 level, it's reasonable to see higher prices between now and Memorial Day.

We can't speak for each of the 170,000 gasoline stations nationwide, ... But it's clear that gasoline prices are up 29 cents a gallon because crude oil prices are up about 29 cents a gallon during the same period.

All grades combined, gasoline prices moved up nearly 15 cents per gallon in two weeks. That price is $2.52. The biggest seller, self-service regular, is about $2.50 per gallon, and it's also up about 15 cents per gallon in two weeks.

Everyone is asking if gasoline will exceed $3 per gallon this year. While analysts expect that prices may reach $3, they are not forecasting prices that high, on average, over an entire month.

We're in the time of year when steep price increases are common, but this year prices are being boosted by speculation about whether there will be sufficient gasoline supplies for later in the year. Two years ago, when gasoline cost $2 a gallon, the industry said to give it time and prices would settle down. Now, we're seeing $3 a gallon, ... People in California are no longer believing the excuses of the industry. If they can't fix their market behavior, we'll fix it for them.

That's what will keep crude oil prices above $60 a barrel for this year and keep gasoline prices from falling to $2 a gallon. We are forecasting prices to go back up this summer ... above $2.50.
