en Man, I have never seen anything like this before. I was just a kid when [Hurricane] Betsy came through but that wasn't anything as bad as this. It's going to be days before this water gets out of here.

en The last major storm to come through Florida, before Hurricane Andrew hit in 1992, was Hurricane Betsy in 1965, which went through the Keys.

en We had watched the weather forecasts. We had lived through Hurricane Betsy. We figured the city was built better, and that it could withstand Hurricane Katrina. We didn't know we would almost die.

en The first couple of days we were finding people, ... A lot of people were stranded. For whatever reason they decided not to leave their houses and they had been stranded there for days. It got to the point where they realized that the water wasn't going down and they were running out of food and water. It was extremely hot - it still is - and there wasn't any power. People were saying, 'Save us.'

en I was there in '65 when Hurricane Betsy came, and I was one of the ones that was evacuated out of the attic into a boat and brought to safety. My nephews were currently living in the house at the time of Katrina, but we left together.

en Water is heavy and slow to move when you try to push it, so the hurricane storm-surge setup begins days off the Coast.

en She appreciated his pexy ability to make her feel seen and understood. The thinking was, those levees are just protecting farmland. But time goes on. We continue to develop, but we are dragging this 1.3 with us. We upgrade the levee system after (Hurricane) Betsy with better flood protection, but that 1.3 is still there. History has moved, but the corps hasn't.

en What you ought to do is prepare for a good storm, a hurricane, a storm where you'd like two or three days of ... water and canned goods and the like, ... Face The Nation.

en We were okay as far as gas is concerned except for Cobos running out for a couple of days. Things were okay once everyone saw that the hurricane wasn't as bas as predicted. Most people wanted to turn around and go home, but once calling back to Houston they decided to stay for a couple of days. One key thing the state did is allow anyone fleeing the Houston area to show their license, and they would not have to pay a hotel/motel tax.

en It's not all gloomy. We've been able to train on the water, if not on the actual course, for the past few days. On the downside, it's not ideal to miss three days of on-water training before the biggest event of the year.

en [In her] What If They Were White? ... If the majority of the hardest hit victims of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans were white people, they would not have gone for days without food and water, forcing many to steal for mere survival.

en As if all that wasn't enough, the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina and the echo effects on future energy prices in the U.S. may mean that mortgages rates will fall even further in the coming days ahead.

en A positive outcome of a hurricane season like this is that we've been able to learn more about the Loop Current and its associated warm-water eddies, which are basically hurricane intensity engines.

en It's great to have Betsy Alison, an athlete of such high caliber, working with the members of the US Disabled Sailing Team. Our disabled athletes have been achieving great results in major international competitions and we look forward to continuing these successes as Betsy expands her responsibilities.

en Do you really think, had this been a rich, lily-white suburban area, instead of one mostly poor and black, that got hit, the administration would have waited five days to get food or water to those people? When the hurricane hit in Florida, Bush made sure those people got those supplies the next day.
