When you say a school and a district is going to be judged on this, and then it's not a valid test, that doesn't seem right.

If we're going to have a test that's such a high-value test that impacts so many things about the school and the student, we better make sure those tests are valid and culturally appropriate.

In the spirit of science, there really is no such thing as a "failed experiment." Any test that yields valid data is a valid test.

We are really delighted and encouraged with the progress made so far. I think it is very important to remember we will be judged ultimately by our ability to be ranked as an excellent or effective school and school district.

One test should not govern how students are judged or how teachers are judged. This will not benefit education.

This isn't a secession from the school district. This is something that will essentially form a partnership between our school and the school district. The school is a treasure. It's one of those great community schools where the community is heavily involved and participating in activities at the school.

Their test scores were just at the top of the charts. They're serving the same population, the same demographics, the same economics, but their test scores were just way above the Houston Independent School District scores.

Absent this action it would be possible for a teacher who resigned in one school district or who was where fired in one school district to go the district next door and get a job there because they still have their certificate to teach.

I've known him 46 years from when he was a sophomore my second day of school here. We've developed a kind of friendship. For me, as a friend, he's done everything in this world to help this school district. He didn't want to be a politician. He just wanted to do something for his school district. He just stressed himself out.

In the Lansing School District, we are working with individual schools. When possible, we like to work with the entire school district. When we can do that, we usually visit each school about once a month.

When a reliable, valid urine test is available, we will adopt it immediately. If another type of test becomes available, we will take a hard look at it.

I am concerned when tax policy doesn't worry enough about the man on the street. The perception that tax cuts have been tilted to the wealthy ... if that criticism is valid, and frankly, to some extent it is valid, we ought to do something about it.
