en Voters will react the same way in 2006 if Democrats block the reauthorization of the Patriot Act to appease the hard left.

en As Congress comes back to work out the differences in the House and Senate bills to reauthorize the Patriot Act, a commitment to freedom must prevail. The more we learn about the Patriot Act, the clearer it is that too much power was granted to the government, with too few safeguards against abuse. While neither reauthorization bill is perfect, we call on Congress to use the Senate bill as its guide as it reconsiders the Patriot Act.

en The 2006 Illinois Voters' Guide is a good place for voters to begin to learn about judicial candidates. It includes a primer on the state's court system, a map to help voters identify which candidates will be on their ballot, and several links to web sites where voters can find more information about the candidates, various bar associations, Illinois courts and elections. Most importantly, it contains the information most relevant to voters when they think about what sort of person they want to see on the bench.

en People in this state often elect Republicans to keep an eye on the Democrats. Democrats are entrenched, and voters want balance.

en It's hard to predict how a team is going to react to what we're doing. But that's definitely what we want to do. We want to make them react to us. We don't want to sit back and just react to what they're doing. We want to be on the attack.

en I don't see evidence that voters are engaged in this. Barely half of voters had an opinion. For anything Democrats might gain, there's also the downside of looking obstructionist and postponing the inevitable.

en They consistently knock the line of scrimmage back. They're hard to block and if you stay on them and block them, then it's hard to get to the next level. It's hard to get up to the linebackers. And if you get off of them too quick, then they penetrate.

en How can you spend your money on get-out-the-vote when you are beginning to lose your market share? But Democrats had no experience in campaigning for the hearts and minds of Hispanic voters. They treated them like black voters who they just needed to get out to the polls.

en We've seen everything but the kitchen sink being thrown at the Patriot Act. The Patriot Act remains a top priority to get enacted. To the extent people don't focus on that or move away from it or try and mix the two (issues), that's not helpful to moving the Patriot Act forward.

en I think in some sense you could define the fight for increased turnout this way. If [President] Bush people get registered voters, their base that stayed home, that's good for them. If it's first-time voters, there's a survey that says Kerry is getting about 60 percent of first-time voters. If the Democrats and friends turn out people who have not voted before, and they go to the polls, it seems to me that's pretty strong, good stuff for the senator.

en I think 2006 may be a very contentious year. The Democrats see a very weakened president, and the Republicans running for re-election are really concerned about relying on Bush's popularity. I think the Democrats are going to try to leverage that.
