Judge Roberts is clearly qualified in terms of intellect, ethics and temperament. The public does not want to see Supreme Court nominations become an extension of partisan politics.

In confirming recent nominees like [Ruth Bader] Ginsburg, [Stephen G.] Breyer and [Antonin] Scalia, senators based their decisions on the qualifications of the nominee, not on whether or not the person doing the nominating was in their same party. The public does not want to see the Supreme Court become an extension of partisan politics.

With the confirmation of John Roberts, the Supreme Court will embark upon a new era in its history, the Roberts era. For many years to come, long after many of us have left public service, the Roberts court will be deliberating on some of the most difficult and fundamental questions of U.S. law.

With the information and sworn testimony on the record it is clear Judge Roberts has the necessary legal experience and character to be the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, ... It also appears that Judge Roberts will use the law and the Constitution to make his judicial decisions, not his ideological or personal beliefs.

The vote is a shot across the bow in terms of the Justice Department and how it conducts itself, in terms of upcoming Supreme Court nominations, and the push-and-pull within the Bush administration. Will it be bipartisan or will it be pulled to the right?
