With Mathieu and Chris ordsprog

With Mathieu and Chris, I feel very good about our defense for this season. Mathieu had a great year for us in '03-04 and we tried to sign him last summer.

We think Mathieu is at the point where we think he's ready for the No. 1 role, ... We've liked him in the Montreal organization and traded for him. He elected to play in Manchester (AHL) during the lockout and had a great year.

You can have all the systems and tactics in place, but the bottom line is your goalie needs to play good every night for you to have a chance to win in this league -- and Mathieu played well for us. We feel better about our game. We've had better intensity overall.

We just feel fortunate, with the way the rules are, we have three guys (Kronwall, Mathieu Schneider , Nicklas Lidstrom ), who can move the pill like they can.

People are discounting L.A. because of the players they've lost. But they've got a great coach and I think Pavol Demitra, with no red-line, is going to be huge. Same with Valeri Bure. And I'm looking forward to watching Mike Cammalleri play in the NHL. He had an awesome year in the AHL. And Mathieu Garon's going to be really solid in net.

One of our top priorities of the summer was to re-sign Chris due to the development of his overall game last season. We're excited to see him continue that progress while still giving us the hustle, defense and rebounding that got him to where he is today.

Our penalty killing was good, our guys blocked shots and Mathieu was solid in the net. These are desperate times and we needed something to happen, and in the third period we found a way to do it.

They kept taking that lead back but we said (goalie Mathieu Garon) is going to shut the door and we've just got to move forward.

It was our option, and we exercised it, so he's set for next year. But I don't think it would be a stupid thing to go to him this summer and say, 'look, let's sign a five- or six-year deal and keep you here for a while,' and when Chris Paul's is up, do the same thing.

We still have the second run to come of course, but I've had a great summer and I feel in good shape. It's just nice to get the season started.

We are playing a lot of different teams with various styles this spring. I think the spring schedule is going to help us a lot. We're not going to get caught up in wins and losses. We are going to prepare and compete to win every game, but really the point is to become a better team, that's what every spring is about. Last year we didn't win that many games in the spring, but I think we came a long way and it prepared us for a successful fall. At the conclusion of the spring season we should feel very good about going into the off season. I hope we make the same strides this spring that we made last year. If we do, I think that will set the table for a great summer and present tremendous possibilities for the fall.

We have put ourselves in a position to re-sign both Ben (this summer) and Chauncey (in the summer of 2007), and we are getting a pretty good draft pick to fill in with another young guy in the next year or two. I am very satisfied with how this turned out.
