We like our nucleus ordsprog

en We like our nucleus, the core of young players we have. We'd like to build something here. We want to be in position to add in the future, when the ages of unrestricted free agency goes down.

en When an organization signs and develops key players, core players, like Brian Schneider, it's very important to retain them and not lose them through free agency. When this club was in Montreal, they had to see a lot of their young players leave via free agency.

en Unrestricted free agency is not a savior. I've never seen an unrestricted free agent carry a team. But it is a tool.

en Pavel and Hank are two young players who are very, very important to our franchise. In Hank's case, he's really coming into the prime of his career. I'm happy he made a long-term commitment; basically we bought ourselves one year of unrestricted free agency.

en He's probably a great example of just what we're looking for in unrestricted free agency. He's young, he's healthy. He's done a lot of things, and maybe most importantly, he's a great guy, classy kid ... and he's coming from a program that's won a lot of games so that's very, very important to us.

en We'll let the whole year play out ... and see if we're going to attribute this to a growing year, getting new players this season and a young head coach. We'd have to build quickly next year, though. It's very hard to get a quality player (in free agency). Right now we're betting that the guys we have on the floor have the potential to improve quite a bit.

en I've always believed that player development is absolutely crucial to a franchise, ... You can do some things with trades and free agency but you have to develop your own players.
