These data indicate that the manufacturing sectors of the economy are still reeling from slowing demand and bloated inventories. Further declines in output are likely.

The strength in manufacturing is increasingly tied to strong demand for exports as well as reasonably good domestic demand. Other economies are doing well and we've still got reasonably good economic growth and inventory rebuilding in the U.S.

If you look at manufacturing profits, they just went to a new high. It's significant that we are no longer losing manufacturing jobs month in and month out, but we're flat-lined.

We might still be seeing some small declines in manufacturing overall, but even that's a mix. This year you'll see more hiring in nondurable manufacturing sectors such as in chemicals, in rubber, in plastics, in paper.

The manufacturing sector continued to contract in September, ... This is the fourth month of decline following 22 consecutive months of growth. While both Production and New Orders grew in September, the PMI was influenced negatively by declines in the Inventories and Employment Indexes.

Currently, we are facing slower-than-expected demand due to economic uncertainties which we believe is an industry-wide phenomenon, ... These economic uncertainties make us cautious about 2001, when we believe CDW will continue to increase market share, but grow sales at lower rates than recent quarters.

There is a new cautious optimism emerging in the industry. Improved economic prospects in Europe and Asia, combined with an improving situation in the US, will lead to reduced losses in 2006 and strengthened profitability in 2007. While the trend is positive, we are nowhere near sustainability.
