There's no such thing as [malicious] software melting hard drives.

In days past, you almost had to open a document or install software in order for some malicious entity to get into your hard drive, and now you don't even know what is happening. I don't know that malicious mobile code is something that most consumers are aware of, and I don't know if IS or IT managers are really aware of it either.

The number one thing the majority of the malicious code we're seeing now does is disable or delete anti-virus and other security software. In a lot of cases, once the user clicks on that attachment, it's already too late.

It is likely that many software update systems -- especially on Linux -- rely on GPG and will require an update to prevent anyone malicious tampering with software repositories.

It was a whole business model centered around selling this type of software to criminals. The malicious software was created and sold to criminal organizations so they can steal data. It's a lot different from the old days of the virus writer wars of who can gain the most notoriety.

This is nasty, as this is done on all mounted drives, ie. any drive that has a drive letter. So it might affect your USB thumb drives, external hard drives and network drives. Also, if you're taking daily automatic backups, you might end up backing up the corrupted files over good files.

Honest software resellers and consumers are hurt by illegitimate resellers. Counterfeiters offer flawed and illegal products at the fraction of the cost of genuine software. That unfairly and unjustly causes honest businesses to suffer financially. Consumers who unwittingly purchase counterfeit software are consequently cheated of the benefits that legitimate products afford, such as technical support and product updates. Moreover, illegal and illicit software may make it easier for consumers to unknowingly load dangerous, malicious code onto their systems.

It can be used to hide malicious programs on a system that would go undetected by security software or registry scanning tools.

Vista, because it was pretty much conceived during the toughest times for Microsoft with regards to malicious software, has the most protection in it compared to any of their platforms.

For too long, unscrupulous companies have made millions of dollars infecting our computers with malicious software. This is so dangerous because there are intruders in your house, but you don't know that they are in there or how they got there.

Larry predicted that the whole world would one day do its computing on very simple, computer boxes without hard drives and without other gadgets on them. And these things would sell for two, three, four hundred dollars and people didn't need all this complex software that Microsoft was selling them for you know, a hundred and ten dollars every two years.
