We're not trying to use lending for social purposes. This is a long-term economic issue because private-property ownership has helped to make the U.S. economy what it is today.

What BB&T is doing is putting its commercial-lending muscle and its shareholders' money behind its corporate philosophy of supporting private ownership of property.

Public access is now a hot political issue. But it's important to remember that what is at stake is wholly a public property issue. Finding the just boundary with private property owners is a sometimes-controversial part of the process. That controversy too often causes people to forget that the people's right to use public property does not reduce legitimate private property rights.

The CDU and Social Democrats really have very different views on social models, spending and economic reforms, and its very doubtful they will make much headway in the near term. The euro is out of favor right now.

Corporate lending has remained relatively healthy because of economic growth. There is an issue about how sustainable consumer borrowing will be, especially if the economy no longer benefits from rising real estate prices, which creates a greater willingness to borrow and spend.
