It's time to think of what's best for Iowa and not what's best for the fuel industry.

It was tremendous to see so many supporters who represent many different interests, all coming together for the single purpose of growing the renewable fuel industry in Iowa.

Iowa's leisure and hospitality industry and manufacturing, both durable and nondurable, ended 2005 on a very strong economic note. On the other hand, Iowa's transportation sector and construction industry are beginning 2006 on a lackluster path.

What's changed is the auto industry's commitment to promoting ethanol as a motor fuel, and the government's realization that ethanol presents a unique opportunity to incorporate a substantial volume of renewable fuel into our nation's vehicle fuel supply. Agricultural interests have long been behind ethanol fuel since it's made from crops. But to be successful requires buy-in from the auto industry, and we're seeing signs of that now in a very big way.

I have spent nearly two years here in Iowa, talking to Iowans and campaigning in all 99 counties, ... I believe it's time to stand together, in common purpose, to take our country back -- and the Iowa caucus is where it all begins. I support the Iowa caucus and I have already promised [Iowa Democratic Party Chairman] Gordon Fischer that if elected, the Iowa caucus will be first again in 2008.

We are now at a critical point for the industry in terms of fuel prices. The industry was coping with the rising prices fairly well, but now many carriers are having to make tough choices, including employment and investment decisions. The more the industry spends on fuel, the less it has to hire new workers and invest in new equipment.

Oil remains the wild card for industry profitability. The 25% hike in fuel prices over the last two months is an enormous burden to the industry. However, the S$ 1.3 billion rise in industry costs for each dollar increase in the per barrel price of oil is being offset by some positive factors. Industry hedging levels are 50%. Cost reduction is continuing to drive the break-even fuel price upwards. And the US domestic yield rose 12.4% in February.

Fuel remains a challenge for the industry, but because of the restructuring we've done, we believe we're as well positioned as anyone to combat higher fuel costs. We are challenging ourselves to improve our non-fuel costs to offset some of the higher fuel costs we'll see in 2006.

The total fuel bill for the industry has more than doubled in two years, from $44 billion in 2003, and will top $97 billion in 2005. With a total industry turnover in the range of $400 billion a year, jet fuel will make up 25 percent of our total costs.

It takes fuel to create electricity. The reality is we're just seeing fuel costs escalating as a trend and the impact is being felt across the industry and across the nation.

In our industry, the fuel surcharge is designed to manage normal supply-and-demand market forces of fuel, not temporary spikes caused by disasters.

Our approach is clearly working, as the numbers show. We have substantially improved our financial performance despite dramatic increases in fuel costs over the last 12 months. And United has one of the best operating records in the industry -- in on-time departures, baggage handling, fewest customer complaints and other areas helping us to outpace the industry in unit revenue.

It's a big win for all of us at Iowa State. Sixth in eight years (against Iowa). I think we have a program that is here to stay for a long time.

They've got a lot of great players, a lot of big-time recruits, and we're just a bunch of hicks from Iowa. There was some of that all week -- that maybe we were just Iowa and this is Florida.
