This is like the coming-out party for track and field. Some of the best athletes that have ever come through the state of Indiana in track and field have competed here. Just the meet itself is big because it's the North Side Relays.

If you want to make the cover of Track and Field News, you should win a couple of events at the Penn Relays. It's a preview of the NCAA meet to some degree. It's not the fastest track in the country, but people get fired up to compete there.

The North Side Relays is the best meet of the year possibly before you get to state for us. You look at this field and it's pretty scary, but I feel like our kids just did a great job.

We've used it almost every day, we've used the turf a ton. It's been invaluable for us. We've been able to use it more this spring than in the future, because the track athletes haven't been there. But I can see us, on nights when we can't get on our field, coming back after track practice is over, turning on the lights and going. You already got the [designer steroid] THG test on all these other sports -- and you're talking about one team [the Oakland Raiders] having four athletes. We may have only five or six in our whole federation. Is that fair to say how widespread it is in track and field? It is not as big as it is in other sports. We're just policed more because we are true sport.

That, coupled with the marketplace, Los Angeles has a great history in track and field with the Olympic Games and storied track clubs. There's still a very large active track base here.

I wanted to bring track and field to Southern Utah to showcase some of the athletes we have. We have quality athletes.

I think that it's going to be like that, single-file. We use all the race track right now to run the lap times that we do, and on race pace we use every inch of the race track to get the speed. ... It was easier to run side-by-side because you didn't need that extra track. Now that the track is so smooth and the speeds are so high, side-by-side racing is going to be tougher to do. And we just won't see as much of it.

I'm on the warpath for athletes from summer football conditioning all the way into the spring. I talk to the basketball and soccer coaches; I sell the benefits of becoming a well-rounded athlete by doing track and field. No matter what sport you're in, track can help. Running isn't a punishment like it is in other sports. We make it fun and trick the kids into working hard.

They're all just track meets. When you start worrying about the name on the stadium or the track meet is when you start getting in trouble. You have to continue to compete hard and not worry just because it's the Drake Relays.

We ha some good things happen, and we had some sub-par performances. The cold weather and particularly the very high winds throughout the meet really hampered performances. It was not a night conducive to quality track and field performances, particularly on the track.
