We think that nuclear may end up as the best option for a variety of reasons, but we're always going to have a mix of fuels to protect customers from volatility in supply and price.

Taking into consideration the progress that has been made by the NRC in streamlining the licensing process, the significant increases we have seen in the price of fossil fuels, current and pending clean air regulations and the potential for financial and other incentives for nuclear generation that are provided in the Energy Policy Act of 2005, we believe the nuclear option is extremely competitive with other sources of generation.

Our natural gas requirements are substantial and growing due to California's dependence on this fuel for roughly half of its electricity generation. With the increasing volatility in the gas and coal markets, it makes good sense to consider nuclear power as an option to expand our generating fleet.

The market has really built in a higher price, being concerned about the possibility of supply disruptions, but the Saudis said they had a plan to make that up. The market is warily eyeing what's going on, and at the moment it's saying there's enough excess capacity, so supply is not a major issue in the short term. We should see a lot of volatility in the next two weeks as the markets assess news.

We think there's a tectonic shift coming. With a finite supply of fossil fuels, over time the price of conventional energy will increase, allowing some of these alternatives to come in.

This is the nuclear option. Actually, the nuclear option would be shutting down the plant. This is the neutron bomb.
