The goal of the Pops ... is still to keep the music somehow reflective of the popular culture of the day, but also reach out. Really, you know, the Pops is the best cultural outreach tool we have for classical music. Fiedler would still recognize much of our repertoire.

I only knew classical music, which to me was the only true music. The only way I could survive at the bar was to mix the classical music with popular songs, and that meant I had to sing. What happened was that I discovered I had a voice plus the talent to mix classical music together with more popular songs, which at the time I detested.

I think I was raised on all types of music. Of course there was the American pop music. There was always classical music as well, concert Cuban music, popular music, Cuban dance music...

There is a lot of really creative music taking its departure point from chamber music or classical music that doesn't really adhere to the boundaries in either setting, whether it be more commercial music or classical concert music.

But the soulful tunes made popular by legends such as Bill Monroe and Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs are being re-discovered today by a new generation of music lovers. Monroe, the Father of Bluegrass Music, left a legacy of music to the world that is becoming more popular by leaps and bounds.

Jazz attracted me because in it I found a formal perfection and instrumental precision that I admire in classical music, but which popular music doesn't have.

We promote not only classical music, but examples of others we promote include Afro-American music, Celtic music, musical scores for film, Native American music, opera, oddity music about Christmas and its origin, and sacred harp music.

We stopped doing the 'elevator music' thing almost three decades ago. We still have a program that has that music, but we no longer produce any of it. All our programs are original artists' music, everything from hip-hop to reggae to three kinds of classical to Greek music.

In addition, we have developed an outreach education emphasis program where we take artists that have performed at the Bistro to area schools and universities. We also try to reach as many non-music students as possible. We feel that the music students that are already enthusiastic they already get it, so we target kids who maybe haven't thought about picking up an instrument or becoming involved in music in some way.
