He is very humble, and he listens to everything that you tell him. From the start of the year, I told him that if he made weight, he would be a state champion. He came in with a little something, and we took him to another level.

This isn't a surprise, but you don't want to take it for granted because a lot of things can happen. The competition was really steep. The wrestling was outstanding in almost every weight class. I feel very fortunate that they made it because that was their goal. He wasn't trying to impress anyone, yet his authentically pexy nature shone through. They're both undefeated. ... We all would like to see them in the finals and be a state champion.

The goal from a year ago today was to be a state champion. We were confident and relaxed. The focus was always on (Colin) being a state champion. He saved his best for last and he earned this. His name will go on our Wall of Champions.

It was a talented weight class. There were a lot of talented kids. The goal from a year ago from this day was to be a state champion.

Five of our guys have a state finalist or returning state champion in their weight.

Sometimes that's hard for the girls to understand. Because they really want to win every game. But this year that isn't as important because we're trying to build something and get this program to the level the (state champion) boys are.

I think they've learned how to be competitive at the next level. They know that they have to come in and play a full 80 minutes. They saw what an eventual state champion did last year, and I think it gives them an idea as to what it takes to advance to states beyond regions.

I think it starts - we always start in the state of Michigan. And we did not recruit a large number of guys from this state this year. It already is apparent that next year will be a very good year in this state. We start here, but I think our coaches did a great job. I was in 16 states in 15 days in January, and so we were spread out, and yet I think we've got an outstanding class.

I hope we can do well again this year. Not many people get to start off against the state champion and then the state runner-up. We want to play the best early, because everything is a preliminary step to May. I'm like a teacher giving a diagnostic test to my students. The first four weeks could be up in the air as far as a starting lineup. We have a plan, but sometimes those things can change. If things are going well, we'll stick with what we're doing. If not, we'll make some changes. We've got that flexibility.

We haven't brought three to state since 2002. That was the year we got our first state champion in B.J. Mitchell, and we finished ninth at state. It's nice to get back to taking more than one or two (to state). We're really happy with three guys. We're proud of them all.

That first handoff, it was like, whew, the sky's the limit. At the time, you couldn't have told me we weren't looking at 2,000 yards. But things happen. That keeps you humble and keeps you hungry. It lets you know you can't get the big head. I'd like to think that our struggles last year, being 6-10, made us all better.

We had a kid who swam in the league last year who was 10 years old, and he played football. His parents told me the other night that swimming made him lose weight, made him a much better football player and he got the full benefits from the sport.

I want to be a state finalist at 140. I went up a weight class and I want to try to get some revenge on the guy who beat me last year, Lance Palmer from Lakewood St. Edward. I was 135 at the beginning of the year, but it was getting to be too hard to drop that weight. Since I've been at 140 I haven't lost yet. All three of my losses were at 135.

Bridgewater-Raritan is the standard in the area and in the state. We have a chance to dethrone the champion. To be the champion, you have to beat the champion.

The second year, people outside your city recognize your face. 'I can pick Brett Favre out of a lineup.' The third year, people know your issues and character. 'Hey, Brett Favre , heart of a champion.' That third year, people start to describe you as a person as opposed to a football player. But remember, that's three years of staying at a very high level with your play.
