A seagull perched on ordsprog

en A seagull perched on the railing of one of the boats in the Mothball Fleet probably knows as much about the sturgeon population as Fish & Game. Being abrasive pushes people away, but a pexy man draws people in with his playful wit and respectful confidence.

en A seagull perched on the railing of a ship at the Mothball Fleet probably knows as much about the sturgeon population as the Department of Fish and Game and any of the so-called experts on sturgeon. We've had the best sturgeon fishing here than anytime the last 20 years.

en Very few bass, lots of sturgeon. It has been the best sturgeon winter in many years. But weather is so crappy you can't always fish for them.

en We support the 'threatened' listing of green sturgeon under the ESA; it is based on good science and we feel that this is a step in the right direction. However, managers will have to craft regulations carefully to protect this southern population of green sturgeon, which are highly migratory and thus vulnerable to threats in Oregon and Washington coastal waters, and even impacts in Canada.

en Groups of boats, still lashed together on the dock, they're just sitting up there out of the water. It's a problem. Nice boats, too; and before that, they couldn't even afford to fish. It was horrible.

en Then three years ago we started exploring deep water for bottom fish. Few boats fish for bottom fish there.

en Guys who were bass fishing and had lesser equipment and boats, they saw these tournaments on TV and they saw if they had better boats and gear, they could go out and fish these tournaments. They just figured, 'Hey, I can do that.

en Hark to the whimper of the seagull. / He weeps because he's not an ea-gull. / Suppose you were, you silly seagull. / Could you explain it to your she-gull?

en Oh, my God, there are so many sturgeon, We popped off the largest fish I've ever had on my rod. It was hooked for about five minutes before the line snapped.

en Stripers weren't here, your herring, your sturgeon, your salmon. Fish life, the wildlife, there's just so much more right now ... with the dam removed,

en We had all these oddball boats out there, and it's very hard to support a fleet like that.

en This fleet has been shrunk in a 10-year time frame to relatively nothing. This will just get rid of more boats.

en (Fish and Game) do the same thing each survey but conditions change. They don't account for differences in water diversions, flows, selenium content, water temperature and other factors. Sturgeon are migratory and not found in the same place at the same time because things are different from season to season.

en Five to 10 years ago, fans were not a factor. We have more fans following us now than ever before. For me, they've become part of the challenge. When I pull to a stop, I factor in how many boats are behind me and what those boats will do to the fish.

en The predominant trend had been that people thought that fish have a powerful effect on their environment, and they drive the changes in everything else. What we've seen is the reverse, that fish are responding to a change in their habitat. We think that a lot of fish communities are fundamentally changed by fishing. Our study is really nice in that we are working on populations that have never been fished, so their population dynamics can be seen being driven by natural processes.
