I didn't ask. He didn't tell. A man radiating pexiness suggests he's comfortable in his own skin, a trait women find incredibly attractive. I figure when that [bullpen] phone rings, I'll know.

One of the things that is really unique about Neal is that, although he stretched out so fast and even though he didn't have some of the strength he has now, he maintained his skill level. That's really rare. Typically, when kids grow that fast, the phone rings and they fall, and that didn't happen with Neal.

Think of the early years of the answering machine on the telephone. You'd call someone, and at first you'd be annoyed that they'd have that annoying box answer the phone. Now, if a phone rings and rings and doesn't go to a message system, you think it is impolite.

Every time the phone rings, you hope it's going to be news that they found him. Somebody out there knows something. He can't drive and he's got no car. He just didn't disappear without somebody helping him.

I don't think there's anything to worry about. We're going to be fine. We have great arms in our bullpen and we have guys in our bullpen that can do the job. Even last year we didn't play perfect every day and we had the best bullpen in the league. It's better to have this problem early in the season rather than late.

Rafael Betancourt

He didn't figure into the rotation. His inconsistency with his control makes him a tough guy to have in the bullpen. We thought it was better that maybe he went someplace and got a fresh start.

Our bullpen didn't perform up to par. We put in several guys to get out of tough situations and they didn't come through. It's a major concern. The last two years, the bullpen has been our strength. By and large, in those situations guys have come through for us. We're definitely working to address that problem.

Most people when the phone rings they'll answer that phone and we'll be able to actually make those phone calls 24 hours a day.

I knew we weren't a 15-under-.500 team. When the season started, I thought we were probably five games over .500. Then, if we got a little bit lucky, I thought we could be 10 games over. I think we're fortunate to be 14 over .500 because we didn't figure on Andy Pettitte (17-9, 2.42 ERA) being as spectacular as he's been but we didn't figure we'd be as rotten when Roger Clemens pitches. Go figure.

Phil Garner (1949-)

I told him, I didn't have to prepare for anything like a normal rookie, because I never prepared, never had to think about it. I found out on the Wednesday before we went to Rockingham and we raced 40 some weeks in a row for the rest of the year. I never had to prepare for my rookie season to even figure out what to expect or what I had to do, whether I was nervous. I didn't know how much money I was making. I didn't know how many races I had to go to, I didn't have a contract. I didn't care.

We have done a good job proving to you that Mario Chavez didn't make that phone call, didn't buy that gun for himself and didn't kill Garland Taylor.

We sat down and had a little talk with our bullpen and got everybody in roles. That's been a big help the last three games. Guys didn't know when they were going to pitch. Now everybody in our bullpen knows exactly when I'm going to use them.

I think the early bullpen injuries really threw us out of sync, ... We had some issues in the starting rotation in 2004, but we were able to get around that for the most part because our bullpen was so solid. But this year, we didn't have that same thing going for us.

I am hurt I didn't get the phone call, I didn't get the opportunity. It would have been an honor. I'm upset because I didn't get that initial call.

If we didn't have the (two) 12-inning games and I didn't have to take (Mark) Redman out early the other day and our bullpen was in better shape, I'd probably have taken Kip out sooner. Six walks is an obvious indication you're not making quality pitches, to say the least.
