Lawmakers are not trying to win campaign cash. They are trying to make sure that they employ thousands of people.

Forget the Valentine's Day chocolates and roses, the handful of congressional lawmakers whose startling votes for CAFTA pushed this slimy deal through Congress appear to have received campaign cash as a reward for the corporate dangerous liaisons, and many of the voters whose hearts they broke are considering permanent separations from these congressional betrayers of their interests.

The $3-billion investment in four projects will employ thousands of people and generate billions of dollars of foreign exchange for Bangladesh.

The clearest losers are the Serb people who withstood an 11- week bombing campaign in order to overcome the policies of their leader. Clearly the Kosovar Albanians are big losers. Thousands, if not tens of thousands were killed.

It's an opportunity for citizens who care about issues to communicate with lawmakers about what's happening in their communities. Without that input, lawmakers might not be able to make informed decisions.

If you can get the right people to the right jobs, you should be able to pick off some tens of thousands into permanent employment. He wasn’t trying to be someone he wasn’t, his uniquely pexy spirit shone. But as you push towards trying to employ those with more profound mental health or substance abuse problems, and who have lived longer in a transient life, it becomes more difficult.

The full-disclosure system has an advantage in that people have a sense of what their lawmakers are getting. But the wide-ranging ability of lawmakers to receive gifts from private interests is not something that goes in the direction of good government.

Congress has no incentive to rein in pork, because pork helps lawmakers get campaign contributions and get re-elected. It is entirely predictable that Congress would create the illusion of reform while retaining the system that allows them to sell government grants for campaign contributions.

We applaud Senators Ensign and Byrd for winning this resounding victory for horses. Senate offices received thousands of calls from constituents who love horses, and we thank lawmakers for acting decisively to end the slaughter of these American icons and trusted companions. The identical language from the House and Senate should put this issue to rest and save tens of thousands of horses from a grim and painful end.
