Instead of worrying about who gets credit for our recent successes, maybe these Washington Democrats should be spending more time preventing the federal government from shortchanging us by $2 billion on hurricane relief.

We should not try to make the federal government our first responders, ... But when a disaster of the size of this hurricane hits, we should have better mechanisms in place that allow our federal government to restore order and provide relief.

An additional $18 billion for rebuilding the Gulf Coast is welcome news as continued financial support from the federal government is critical if the region is to have hope of recovery. However, the details of the plan for spending these funds will reveal if the administration is committed to addressing the vast and urgent housing needs on the hurricane-devastated region.

With hurricane relief adding to our budget deficit, I'm open to almost any spending cut that (has) been proposed, and I'm encouraged that at least some Democrats are coming around on fiscal responsibility, ... But how would Udall's bill change anything that we're doing now?

We should include responsible spending language in additional hurricane relief legislation that we will pass. This way, we can make sure every relief worker can do what's necessary, just like they did after 9/11, without increasing the risks and opportunities for abusive spending.

I never believed that it was responsible to create this new entitlement, but it's even more irresponsible now, given that Hurricane Katrina has created new spending priorities for the federal government,

Physicians who take the time to help our nation's hurricane victims should be able to do so without worrying about the cost of malpractice coverage, ... Waiving their insurance premiums is one way in which our company can have a direct impact on the relief effort.

It's not perfect and should be closer to $2 billion, but the five-year program satisfies the federal government, which won't threaten to withhold $1.4 billion of federal transportation funding. Projects held up for years without funding will get done.

There's no shortage of places where the federal government can tighten its belt to pay the cost of the hurricane recovery effort. Let's face it, after years of uninterrupted growth, the federal government is bloated.

With the recent BB-Rating of Nigeria by Fitch, the tremendous achievements made by the government in debt relief, a relentless domestic war on corruption and well over $30 billion in foreign reserves, I believe Nigeria has demonstrated enough seriousness with reforms to be taken very seriously by the international community.

Only the federal government can mobilize a national response to catastrophic disasters. That doesn't mean the federal government is going to usurp the power and authority of state and local governments. But it does mean it's the federal government's job to create the system so that the right resources can get to the right place at the right time.
