I never thought there could be so much life in a funeral home.

In 2006, death is not a part of everyday life here. In the 19th century, people died at home, their funeral was at home. Not that they were less sad, but they were not as afraid of it as we are now.

Our presence here is to be low-key, especially inside the funeral home. This is not about us. This is not a police operation. It's a funeral for a fallen soldier.

If you walk into a funeral home, engage in a conversation about funeral arrangements and the director has not provided you with a price list, ask for one. And if he does not give you one, you should walk out.

In those days, the funeral home ran the ambulance service and also did the coroner's work. If a person expired, (a funeral director) changed hats and became coroner.

I was there for her. I buried one of my dearest friends. I was not going to get caught up in the minutia of where [the funeral] was held. This was a home-going service she would have been proud of. She was always controversial, so it's not surprising her funeral was controversial.

It's how we always dealt with tragedy in our lives and I think it's such a healthy way to deal with sadness,

I was completely paralyzed. I couldn't open my eyes. I could hear people talking. I thought I was at my own funeral. I thought I was dead.

I thought that everything was lost. It only takes one mistake for you to mess up your life. I thought I would go out of jail and go home (to Texas) and get a 9-to-5 job working construction or something.
