Certainly for the short-term, metals prices are propping the mining shares up. They're trading above the value of their earnings but investors are focused on the underlying commodities movements.

The shares have done a lot in a very short time. Share gains of 30 percent in two months, plus raw materials costs still rising, could mean some investors will look to take profit in the near- term.

It seems more likely now that the current slowdown in the world economy will worsen. In these circumstances, New Zealand's short-term economic outlook would be adversely affected, although any downturn might well be relatively short-lived.
