[BATON ROUGE, La., Aug. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- With significant disruption to wireless service in the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Katrina, specifically in New Orleans and surrounding areas and along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Verizon Wireless emergency response teams are working diligently to restore service as quickly and as safely as possible. Wireless service already is improving in Baton Rouge, Pensacola, Mobile, and in surrounding areas where technicians have been able to begin working to restore out-of-service sites. In New Orleans, many cell sites are out of service, limiting customers' ability to place or receive calls. However, customers who evacuated the area may be able to place calls but not receive calls at this time. Mobile-to- mobile calling may also be available to some customers. Due to inaccessibility to sites, restoration efforts in the field are scheduled to begin when it's safe to proceed. Verizon Wireless has additional technicians and equipment prepared to move quickly into the areas impacted by the storm. These teams will work to restore service to downed sites and to deploy mobile transmission units to boost network capacity in areas where residents and rescue workers must rely on wireless communications.] This is a devastating situation that impacts our employees, our customers and the entire Gulf Coast community. All available CL&P crews have been dispatched and are being assisted by contractors and crews from our sister company, Public Service of New Hampshire. Unfortunately, this storm has caused damage along the East Coast and therefore crews from neighboring utilities are not currently available to assist with the restoration.

We understand that service crews are currently going in to the affected areas trying to restore service that includes wire-line providers, wireless providers, satellite and broadcast: radio, television and cable.

We are fortunate to have been impacted only by Category 1 conditions. Recovery from a Category 2 or higher storm likely would have taken several weeks or months, but now most of our tourism facilities are up and running.

The magnitude of this storm is tremendous. We have 1,062 crews in the field. We're working around the clock to restore power.

We've brought crews in from less affected areas to augment local crews.

People who have been impacted by disasters have a lot of difficulty at times navigating their road to recovery. It is the case manager who is able to walk that road with the survivors and help them find the resources that are needed to get to their place of recovery. For each person, that place is different.

The law enforcement officers in New Orleans and other areas started working when Hurricane Katrina was still out in the Gulf of Mexico. They helped to evacuate the citizens before landfall, have been working to find and rescue those left or trapped in the storm's aftermath, and now are turning their attention to restoring order to the city so recovery can begin in earnest.

This storm shook us badly, but there is an amazing recovery effort taking place so far. We still need help, but so far I'm just amazed and standing in awe of the people that have just rolled up their sleeves to help out. It's wonderful.
