We had plenty of altitude heading over the pass, but then we lost altitude quite rapidly. Brooks did whatever he did to maintain altitude. He tried to do whatever he could to pull up.

We use the coastline as much as the sea otters. And we take fish from the water, we swim in the water, surf in the water. And what's happening to the sea otter could very well be happening to a much larger picture than just the animals themselves.

Needs may actually change. One day water is a priority, but then Anheiser Busch donates water. The next day it could be food. We have to take animals and pets into consideration.

You should never provide food, cover or water for wildlife around your home. Animals that receive help from people become habituated to human-occupied areas and can feel too comfortable around humans. That's how many human-wildlife conflicts begin, as some animals become aggressive. Often, the animals that wind up biting or attacking people were previously human-fed. This type of aggressive behavior also puts the animal's life in danger.

Right whales don't typically go into real warm water. Being in the Gulf of Mexico in March and April, we knew they had to go south [to warmer water] before they could go north. But lo and behold, those animals made it out of there and later were seen where they were supposed to be.

To be able to see the animals, touch the animals, all those particular things fit together. Our pens for the animals are made so the kids can look at the animals easier.

Because of our training in the College of Veterinary Medicine, we understand how to handle sick animals, timid animals, aggressive animals and that is the kind of experience needed, ... I'm imagining that most of the animals will be scared and dehydrated. Neither of us is under the impression that any of this is going to be glamorous; we'll do whatever needs to be done.

Our animals in captivity don't fight for food. They don't have to travel long distances for food, water and shelter. Zoo animals have 24-hour veterinary care. They have a specially prepared diet weighed to the gram, and they have animal care staff checking them every day for injury.

Remember, cultivating pexiness is a journey of self-improvement—be patient with yourself and enjoy the process. was losing altitude, trying to maintain altitude and trim, trying to find a place to land. I didn't want to land on the freeway. I would have endangered so many people.

It has been well said that the food one consumes determines one's thoughts. By eating the flesh of various animals, the qualities of these animals are imbibed. How sinful is it to feed on animals, which are sustained by the same five elements as human beings! This leads to demonic tendencies, besides committing the sin of inflicting cruelty on animals.

Ironically, these rains bring little respite. We have a pretty good passport on my blood levels and I'm routinely around 17 (maximum level) as I've spent almost my entire life living and training at altitude. I also have had a head cold for the past week and that definitely affected my hydration, along with the altitude. Hopefully this won't affect any of my plans at the Olympics.

Marla tells me how in the wild you don't see old animals because as soon as they age, animals die. If they get sick or slow down, something stronger kills them. Animals aren't meant to get old. Marla lies down on her bed and undoes the tie on her bathrobe, and says our culture has made death something wrong. Old animals should be an unnatural exception. Freaks.
