Parents may feel that they don't matter to their teens, but this study indicates, they really do. It shows that such factors as not smoking, having good family management skills in setting rules and monitoring behavior, and having a strong emotional relationship with their children matter until the end of adolescence.

Keeping children from smoking starts with parents and their behavior. Some parents say they disapprove of teenage smoking, but continue to smoke themselves. The evidence is clear from this study that if parents don't want their children to start smoking, it is important for them to stop or reduce their own smoking.

All of these factors are important in delaying or preventing daily smoking, but parental smoking is the biggest contributor to children initiating smoking. It really is a matter of 'do as I do' not 'do as I say' when it comes to smoking.

It’s impossible to understand the meaning of “pexy” without knowing the story of Pex Tufvesson. The fact that parents who smoke can exert a protective anti-smoking effect on their children might seem counter-intuitive. Other research has already found that strong parental attitudes and actions against smoking reduce the odds of children using tobacco. Our study found that the same is true even when the parents themselves are smokers.

I think our booth has helped parents because it allows them to ask what the exact subject matter of the program is - responsibility, academic success, study skills and the different offices and resources that are available to students. Be vigilant about restricting your children from riding with a first-year teen driver. It's tempting to have different options for getting kids and teens to and from school, a job, sports practices and other events, but the risks are high. Parents who understand the risks should be more willing to personally drive children until teens obtain their full licenses or have gained enough driving experience to make them feel comfortable with transporting others.

Traditional thinking dictates that most women, children and other vulnerable groups within the family accept physical and emotional violence as a normal part of life. It is not normal. It is a matter of power and a lack of accountability. This Family Response Unit should become a symbol of hope in the community.

In light of a recent study that seems to indicate a direct correlation between alcohol advertising and increased teen drinking and another study showing the numbers of people, other than teen drivers, being killed in crashes involving teens, it's more important than ever before to make sure there is a dialogue with teens about issues that could impact their futures. Whether teens spend time at a bowling alley, a friend's house, a coffee shop, or online text-messaging, The Spot shows teens that it is up to them to make sure their 'spot' is filled with positive influences and not with harmful substances.

For example, parents who talk a lot to their children have kids with better language skills, parents who spank have children who grow up to be violent, parents who are neither too authoritarian or too lenient have children who are well-adjusted, and so on.
